DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHost Sponsor\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Hospitality Sponsor\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA native Washingtonian\, Allyn Johnson is a musician\, composer\, arranger\, and producer whose trademark sound gives brilliance and fortitude to the art of jazz improvisation. Johnson began playing piano at the age of five and got his start as an accompanist for the youth choir in his uncle’s church. While a student at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC)\, where he earned a B.M. in Jazz Studies\, he was mentored by the late jazz legend Calvin Jones and was the first recipient of the Felix E. Grant Scholarship. He was an adjunct professor of music and assistant director in UDC’s Jazz Studies program for six years before succeeding Jones as the director in 2005. In 2001\, Johnson was chosen for Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program and returned to teach in the program in 2002. In 2005\, he started the Divine Order\, an ensemble combining gospel\, jazz\, and classical music. Johnson also has a group called Sonic Sanctuary that performs a range of music from acoustic and jazz to jazz fusion and funk.

SUMMARY:Sarah Moyers
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Catlett\, VA\, Sarah Moyers is a jazz vocalist and arranger. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at George Mason University where she studied under Dr. Darden Purcell\, and took second place in the 2018 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition. She has shared the stage with artists such as the New York Voices\, John Pizzarelli\, and Patti LuPone\, and has and appeared at venues including historic Washington D.C. jazz club Blues Alley. Sarah recently returned to the area after serving as a vocalist for the United States Air Force Band for over six years\, during which time she toured throughout the East Coast\, West Coast\, Arizona\, Texas\, the Hawaiian island chain as well as Malaysia and Australia.

Featuring some of the finest musicians in the Washington\, D. C. metro area\, the group was created in 2021 to perform the compositions (original and jazz standards) and arrangements of its leader\, saxophonist\, Steve Williams. Composer\, arranger and saxophonist Steve Williams has enjoyed a thirty-five-year career performing many styles of music. He has appeared on numerous albums including the Latin Grammy winning (2008) “Caribbean Jazz Project/Afro Bop Alliance Big Band featuring Dave Samuels.” Steve’s big band album\, “Steve Williams and Jazz Nation\,” is available on OA2 Records and features Steve’s exciting arrangements and compositions. Steve is a former member of the United Stated Navy Band Commodores\, serving as the band’s lead alto player and musical director\, contributing over fifty compositions and arrangements.
